Biological classification notes

Biological classification notes.  11 . Chrysophytes includes diatoms and desmids.  12. In diatoms, members of Chrysophytes, the cell wall forms two thin overlapping shells, that fit together as a soap box.  13. Diatoms left behind large amount of cell wall deposits in their habitat ' this accumulation over billions of years is referred to as diatomaceous Earth.  14. Diatoms are the chief producers in the oceans.  15. Dinoflagellets are mostly marine and photosynthetic  16. Euglenoids are freshwater organisms found in stagnant water. Instead of a cell wall, they have a protein rich layer called pelicle which makes their body flexible.  17. Slime moulds are saprophytic protists.  18. Under suitable conditions, slime moulds form an aggregation called plasmodium which may grow and spread over several feet.  19. There are four major groups of protozoans.  20. Sleeping sickness is caused by flagelleted protozoan called trypanosoma. ...

Biological classification - 2

Biological classification - 2 1. Aristotle was the earliest scientist to attempt a more scientific basis classification. He used simple morphological characters to classify plants into trees, shrubs and herbs. 2. Fungi have chitin in their cell wall while green plants have cellulose. 3. According to five Kingdom of classification, the unicellular eukaryotic organisms were placed in Kingdom protista.  4. The Whittaker 's classification system is not only based on morphological, physiological and reproductive similarities, but also on phylogenetic relationships.  5. Methanogens are present in the gut of several ruminant animals such as cows and buffaloes and they are responsible for the production of methane from the dung of these animals.  6. In Nostoc, the site of nitrogen fixation is heterocyst.  7. Cholera, tetanus, and citrus canker are well known diseases caused by different bacteria.  8. Bacteria reproduce mainly by fussion.  9. The mycoplasma ar...

The living world

The living world Important notes : 11. The scientific names of housefly, wheat and lion is Musa domestic, tritium aestivam and panthera leo respectively  12. Brinjal and potato belong to the same genus solanum.  13. Lion, leopard and tiger belong to the same genus panthera.   14. Cats and dogs belong to the families felidae and canidae respectively.  15. Genera solanum, petunia and Datura are placed in the same family solanaceae.  16. Plant families like convolvulaceae, solanaceae are included in other polynomiales mainly based on the floral characters.

The living world

Noteworthy points of the chapter : 1. Ernst Mayr is called 'The Darwin of the 20th century '. 2. The numbers and types of organisms present on earth represent Biodiversity. 3. The process of naming of living organisms is called nomenclature. 4. I BN stands for international code for Botanical Nomenclature whereas ICZN stands for international code for zoological nomenclature. 5. The system of providing a scientific name to an organism with two components is called Binomial Nomenclature and was given by carolus linnaeus. 6. The two components of Binomial nomenclature are generic and specific epithet. 7. Both the words in a biological name, when handwritten are separately underlined or printed in italics to indicate their Latin origin. 8. There are many categories and ranks in classification and are generally referred to as taxonomic categories or taxa. 9. The title of linnaeus ' publication is systema naturae. 10. All categories constitute, known as taxonomic category.
